New Safe Haven Baby Box Installed at Green County EMS

A new Safe Haven Baby Box has been installed at Green County EMS building in Greensburg, giving parents in crisis a safe, anonymous option to surrender an infant.

The installation was made possible through the efforts of local advocates, community members, fundraisers and organizations, including Circle of Friends, Green County EMS and supporters of the Safe Haven Baby Boxes program.

Nancy, an advocate for Safe Haven Baby Boxes, expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped make the project possible.

The Green County installation is the 68th Safe Haven Baby Box in Kentucky, part of a program that now spans 26 states.

Local victim advocate Maggie Lockard said her research showed there was a need for a Safe Haven Baby Box in Green County. Rather than simply recognizing the need, she began researching how the community could make one a reality.

“This is something I never thought we could make happen, but it did,” Maggie said. “It’s been amazing to see all the people who have poured their time, funds and support into this.”

She emphasized that the box is about protecting the life of a child.

“Even if this saves one baby, it saved one, and that’s all that matters,” she said.

The Safe Haven Baby Box provides a secure way for a parent to surrender an infant. When a baby is placed inside, the exterior door is secured and cannot be reopened from the outside. A silent alarm immediately alerts emergency personnel inside the facility so the baby can be retrieved and receive care.

The box also provides access to a 24-hour national hotline, where parents can receive information and support about safely surrendering a baby.

As Green County welcomes its new Safe Haven Baby Box, local organizers hope it will never have to be used—but if a parent is ever faced with an impossible situation, the box will be there.

For everyone involved, the goal is simple: give babies a safe place and give parents a safe choice.
